Chair Study

Build a Rhino model of the three provided bentwood chairs and create a rendering that features the chairs as its primary subject.

Your Rhino model should be as true to the form, proportions and scale of the chairs as possible, but certain components and features can be simplified or omitted (hardware, joinery, flaws, etc). The primary modeling tool for the bent components should be the “pipe” command with other basic surfacing commands used for the other components (extrude, revolve, planarsrf, filletedge, etc).

The rendering aspect of this project requires that you both build a “3D” scene for your chairs and use a photograph as a scene. These renderings will be created with Keyshot.

Learning Outcomes:

Rhino

  • familiarity drawing and manipulating complex, three dimensional curves
  • experience translating forms, proportions, and dimensions from an existing physical object into a 3D Rhino model
  • experience using basic surfacing tools, including “Pipe” and “ExtrudeCrv” to create a complex composition of forms in space
  • experience organizing a multi-component, multi-object file using layers

Keyshot

  • experience using texture and transparency mapping to simulate materials
  • experience combining the subject, setting, and lighting into a scene
  • practice manipulating framing, cropping, and camera angles to develop compelling compositions
  • experience compositing a model into an existing photograph

Evaluation Criteria
A= Excellent
B= Above Average
C= Average
D= Poor
F= Failing

Practical

  • Does the Rhino model follow the submission criteria?
  • Does the rendering follow the stated requirements?
  • Does the drawing follow the stated requirements?

Craft

  • Are the curves drawn with an appropriate number of control points?
  • Do the models accurately capture the form, scale, and proportions of the reference chairs?
  • Is the Rhino file neatly and deliberately organized?

Rendering

  • Does the rendering effectively communicate the form and materials of the chair?
  • Is the composition attractive and well thought-out?
  • Is the image of a high quality?
